Paul L. Williams, Ph.D.

The Fethullah Gulen movement, which seeks to restore the Ottoman Empire, has found a friend and benefactor in Bill Gates of Microsoft fame.

Mr. Gates is ranked the third wealthiest person on planet earth.

In 2007, through the Texas High School Project, the Gates Foundation shelled out $10,550,000 to the Cosmos Foundation, a Gulen enterprise that operates twenty five publicly funded charter schools in Texas.

The Internal Revenue Service Form 990 for Cosmos shows that the Cosmos Foundation received $41,570,721 from taxpayers.

At present, there are 85 Gulan madrassahs (Islamic schools) in the United States, and all operate with public funding.

At the Gulen schools, students are indoctrinated in Turkish culture, language, and religion so that they may be of service in making Fethullah Gulan’s dream of a universal caliphate a reality. The madrassahs sponsor Turkish clubs, Turkish language societies, Turkish dance groups, and annual trips to Istanbul.

According to Stephen Schwartz of the Center for Islamic Pluralism, the 85 Gulen schools advance and promote Islamic beliefs; present the Ottoman Empire, which lasted from 1299 to 1923, as a golden age; and serve to rewrite history by denying the Armenian holocaust under the Turks during World War I.

Many of the teachers at these schools are Turkish émigrés with questionable credentials. Some possess H-1B non immigrant visas which should only be granted to individuals who possess “highly specialized knowledge in a field of human endeavor.” The female faculty members appear in their classrooms wearing hijabs and traditional Islamic attire.

Critics can’t understand why the schools are staffed with imported elementary and secondary school teachers when thousands of trained and certified American educators are begging for teaching positions.

But are the schools really subversive?

Rachel Sharon-Krespin writes: “His (Gulen’s) followers target youth in the eighth through twelfth grades, mentor and indoctrinate them in the ışıkevi, educate them in the Fethullah schools, and prepare them for future careers in legal, political, and educational professions in order to create the ruling classes of the future Islamist, Turkish state.”

Even more telling is a comment from Nurettin Veren, Gulen’s right hand man for 35 years, who said: “These schools are like shop windows. Recruitment and Islamization are carried out through nigh classes.

The use of the Islamic practice of taqiyya or deception to mask the true nature of the schools has been upheld by Gulen himself. In a 1999 sermon, the Turkish pasha offered the following advice to his followers:

You must move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers … until the conditions are ripe, they [the followers] must continue like this. If they do something prematurely, the world will crush our heads, and Muslims will suffer everywhere, like in the tragedies in Algeria, like in 1982 [in] Syria … like in the yearly disasters and tragedies in Egypt. The time is not yet right. You must wait for the time when you are complete and conditions are ripe, until we can shoulder the entire world and carry it … You must wait until such time as you have gotten all the state power, until you have brought to your side all the power of the constitutional institutions in Turkey … Until that time, any step taken would be too early—like breaking an egg without waiting the full forty days for it to hatch. It would be like killing the chick inside. The work to be done is [in] confronting the world. Now, I have expressed my feelings and thoughts to you all—in confidence … trusting your loyalty and secrecy. I know that when you leave here—[just] as you discard your empty juice boxes, you must discard the thoughts and the feelings that I expressed here.

Fethullah Gulen has been called the “most dangerous Islamist” in the world.

He has amassed a fortune – – thanks, in part, to the CIA – – of $25 billion.

This money has been used to transform the secular government of Turkey into an Islamic Republic under the Justice and Democratic Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma, AKP)- – a party under the Gulen’s control.

Abdullah Gul, Turkey’s first Islamist President, is a Gulen disciple along with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Yusuf Ziya Ozcan, the head of Turkey’s Council of Higher Education.

Under the AKP, Turkey has transformed from a secular state into an Islamic country with 85,000 active mosques – – one for every 350- citizens – – the highest number per capita in the world, 90,000 imams, more imams than teachers and physicians – – and thousands of state-run Islamic schools.

Despite the rhetoric of European Union accession, Turkey has transferred its alliance from Europe and the United States to Russia and Iran. It has moved toward friendship with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria and created a pervasive anti-Christian, anti-Jewish, and anti-America animus throughout the populace.

Gulen has also established thousands of schools throughout central Asia and Europe.

Because of their subversive nature, these schools have been outlawed in Russia and Uzbekistan.

Even the Netherlands, a nation that embraces pluralism and tolerance, has opted to cut funding to the Gulen schools because of their imminent threat to the social order.

Gulen is obviously a taqiyya artist.
He knows how to sell by using deception.
I am certain that Bill Gates actually believes his money is going to help poor and starving children.
Poor Bill! He knows computer softwware but know nothing about the bloody history of Islam and the threat to freedoms in the world. He should be educated by someone who know and has contact with him.
Perhaps then he might withdraw his financing.
But first we should all know exactly where the dollars are going. If it is all going to jihad then prove it to Bill and the other dhimmis.

  2. istambul says:

“The Islamist government has also targeted Turkey’s other secular bastion—the judiciary. Last month, a Gulenist prosecutor arrested a secular prosecutor in Erzincan. He was officially charged with belonging to an ultranationalist gang known as Ergenekon, which the Gulenists and AKP claim is trying to overthrow the government. Whether that’s true or not, there is no doubt the arrest solved a lot of problems for the government. Before his arrest, the Erzincan prosecutor was investigating alleged connections between Gulenist fund raising and Chechen and Hamas terrorists. He was also looking into the armed activities of Ismailaga, a radical Islamist movement.”

  3. Turkish4Life says:

Gulen is very clever, for a man who only has a 12th grade education but expanded education in Islamic Theology– Gulen has managed to purchase media like Zaman news and ERBUTV (look on UTUBE at all the propaganda) to deliver PR and praises of the Gulen Movement.
It is also used for damage control and promoting the high standards of the schools which report all of these award winning students but fails to state that the contests in which they compete in are all Gulen sponsored.
I think this has been a good education for Americans what our Charter Schools are all about. Charter Schools fly by the seat of their pants and have less accountability and credibility than the Public Schools of America. Gulen schools are 1/2 Turkish Teachers brought into the USA under Hb-1 Visas their backgrounds are questionable. Teaching Turkish language, song and Dance and having Turkish American Clubs in these schools is a tragedy to the American Culture. We have American students that cannot speak proper English, they don’t know about American folklore or history but they have a Turkification being shoved down their throats, complete with a year -end trip to Turkey for a big “dog and pony” show how Turkey is a country of Peace, Love and Freedom —oh and yes 99.5% Moslem (but they leave out that part)
What have we done? We are outsourcing our children’s education to a foreign entity and we are sending a message to our children that we are not capable of giving them a quality education without the help of Gulen and his “movement” which is worldwide.

  4. Turan says:

Many of our Science and Technology educated in Turkey and Azerbaijan are coming to the USA to work for organizations such as Bill Gates, Dell, Raytheon, Boeing, et al.

  5. BT says:

Rayehon in Tucson Arizona has many Turks within the adminasrtion. They just recently laid of 275 American employess and opened a plant in Turkey. Raytheon in Tucson also finicially supports Sonoran Science Academy which is another Gulen school in the area. It will be intresting to see how this Ethnic Studies ban is going to effect there Turkish Club, Turkish dance and misic poetry contosts etc. The Turkish Olympiad is there ehtnic study program Which is funded by Turkish non profits inside and outside of Arizona. Which also has direct ties to Gulen. The accord institiue the Pacifica institutle , Gulens Interfaith Dialog non profit in Los Angels etc.

The school like all the others have an annual “Euro-Trip” to Turkey. Turkey is not even in Europe or part of the EU. Why do you suppose they say this to Teachers, students, parents etc? See how language is even used as part of the deception?

  7. Turan says:

Sure “accurate information” by the “Great Fethullah Himself” That information is part of Gulen Movement’s propaganda and indocrination agenda.
Nice try but we know Gulen owns media like Zaman and ERBU TV.

Hardly non-biased information now is it?

  8. Turan says:

Funny how his websites never mention the many lawsuits or how some of the Gulen schools have been closed down.
How about discussing why Beehive Academy (UT) and Chesapeake (MD) were closed? Or the many ongoing investigations and audits that are currently happening.

  9. anonymous says:

We are trying to fight this Gulen movement & trying to educate public figures in the US… as this article shows are efforts are no more than one step forward, 2 steps back… but we will keep fighting so Turkey does not turn into another Iran… and the US merely the puppet – although they’d like to think, for now, that they are the puppeteer…

  10. istambul says:

Those of you, who are really looking forward to learn the facts about Fethullah Gulen, just have a look to the Turkish daily news, and read about the autocracy of the ruling FG´s party sitting in the government.

  11. Turan says:

Turkey is worse than Iran because they have inflitrated US Schools, US Government, Universities, Foundations and Corporations.

We are not taking any steps backwards we are moving ahead till Gulen Movement becomes accountable and is transparent with their involvement with US Schools.

Ask one of the Gulen Schools about registering on line: Harmony Schools, Magnolia, Coral Science, Sonoran Science Academy, et al. They downplay the Turkish courses they are teaching and avoid questions about Gulen. Then after about 4 conversations/communication with them the finally admitt the affliation.

Why the lying? Nothing good ever comes from aggressive empires or cults. Have we not seen this?

greetings to you all. from what i understand about this so called”muslim” is that he is a devient who has been denounced by most of the authentic muslim scholars in the world. in fact because of actions which he base as being part of the religion of islam really and truely remove him from being a part of true islam. this is why he is used by many of the covert groups out there, first to promote a false view of the religion of islam and secondly to recrute unsuppecting muslim youth who don’t know anything about their religion. people must understand that people like this man do not represent nor do they adhere to true islam. peace

  15. The Truth says:

Some say they are the best schools around, and some say they can’t be that good without support from global powers. Some say they serve for global peace, and some other say: “Don’t be naive they must have a hidden agenda”. I will not get into questions like “water of the mill” as they have been addressed previously. The main question I am going after is, what are really Gulen Inspired Schools? What makes them standout? How can you distinguish a Gulen Inspired School from any other public or community school?

If you would like to get “real”, “unbiased” and accurate information about the Gulen Inspired Schools, please follow this link.

Great series Paul. There are also other affiliated groups working on a more local level with the same objective: Global Caliphate. See another series on this same subject with a prophetic slant:

  17. istambul says:

Yes it is true, all government employees are islamists (i don´t want to call every muslim islamist) more importantly if you want to get promotion in a government body, you have to be member of their “tarikat” (sect), if you are a male they even check which mosque you are going (which tarikat´s mosque), female workforce participation is decreasing rapidly with the islamist government, but if you have a hidjab it is much more easier to be employed.
People are scared even to talk about Fetullah in Turkey, because our intellectuals who are obviously against Fetullah organization are prisoned, a prosecutor investigating him is in the jail.
There is a social pressure on secular people (muslim or not) in Turkey, you can feel it on the street. I don´t know what they will do to us when they have the total power.
One thing more to remember, when you look to the islamist terror history of Turkey, you can easily say that they are all influenced by Iranian Regime after 1979 and they took Khumeyni as a role model, so i don´t beleive this sunni versus shii thing will work.

  18. Lisa says:

The Gulen Schools push the Turkish language and Culture onto the children. We had our daughter enrolled in one of his Magnolia Schools in California. After our daughter was rehearsing her Turkish Dancing and Singing at home more than her English and Math studies we took a closer look.
First of all, none of the Turkish Teachers are American citizens they are here on HB-1 Visas brought in by the Dialog Foundation and MERF. We questioned the credentials but were told that the Charter schools are not held to the same standards that the public schools are. After doing some investigation about Gulen we found the connection to the schools and were not very happy that this piece of information was not shared with us and what their TRUE agenda is. I don’t appreciate another culture being pushed off on my children under the guise of school. Oh about the school…they would always act like a Charter is a like an elite private school without the fees. In reality all it is is a cheaper way to manage the education systems in our country, when you are emigrated teachers from Turkey and barely paying a liveable wage to them you can cut corners substantially.
My daughter also had some personal issues that we found this particular school was not equipped to handle nor wanted to hear about it.
There is more about Gulen’s US Charter schools at

This was in 2008, at the same time we found another one of Gulen’s schools in the news over confiscating the rosary beads of a student.
Above is the school’s web site, note on the left side the link for Turkish Language, and “Europe” trip.

Below is the 2008, News about the 13 year old girl getting her rosary confiscated by a teacher. This is sad, very sad. Dear Mr. Gulen, how would you like us to confiscate your Quran?

My Husband was brought from Turkey to teach in Texas, we have since moved out of Texas and away from the Gulen Movement. However, someone from Texas just sent this to us. Apparently the Texas Harmony Schools are being investigated for their link to Gulen. We were always taught to never associate the school with Gulen.

  22. Maria Erbil says:

Sorry here is the link it was Channel 7 out of Texas.

  23. Mike says:

Lisa, I checked the link on rosary bead. There is another school in New York which suspended a student over wearing rosary beads. This school too must be tied to Gulen, don’t you think? Let’s go after this! Long live rosary wearing Christian students!..

Tom Horne wants to close public but endorses Sonoran Science Academy ? Tom Horne had been quoted the he does not care if a charter school is aligned with any religious cult or political movement as long as he gets his results. Acharter school is a public funded by your taxes. Now you know how they are getting the numbers !!! Is this how you really want your tax dollars spent??
Fraudulent sales tactics to get your kids enrolled?

    SSA News Letter November 2009
“The news is filled with budgets cuts at the state and national levels and we certainly been impacted by those cuts.
I sincerely hope you will join me in making your Tax Credit to SSA wonderful extra-curricular programs. ”

“Lawmakers leave charter schools untouched in cuts”
Arizona lawmakers gathered this week long enough to cut $144 million from state K-12 schools. Make that $144 million out of district K-12 schools. State money going to charter schools was left untouched. “Where’s the equity in all this?” Rep. Rich Crandall, a Mesa Republican, asked his fellow legislators.

Daisy Education Board Meeting February 4, 2009
“Deb Davis states that she has been working increasing enrollment for the last six years….”
    * There is no waiting list. Other Sonoran Science Academy Schools are below occupancy.
    * It is a common sales tactic to create urgency and value. We call this the “Bandwagon Closing”
    * Sales tactics do not belong in education.

“As part of its educational aims, Karatas said, the academy fosters learning and personal development by having strict behavioral expectations, character education assemblies, small class sizes and systematic consequences for misbehavior”

A letter from the schools attorney to a parent
As you are aware, this firm represents Daisy Education Corporation dba Sonoran Science Academy (“SSA”). SSA has been aware for several months that you are posting defamatory, insulting and inflammatory comments about SSA on craigslist. These posts are resulting in a significant disruption of the SSA community. Furthermore SSA may be suffering potential financial damages as a result of the false statements you are circulating in the online community. SSA responded numerous times to your complaints and concerns, responded to the Arizona State Board of Charter Schools and has allowed you to continue making defamatory comments on the internet for several months. Now it must stop. If you do not immediately cease posting SSA will pursue litigation against you, including an injunction to prohibit further publication of defamatory statements and a lawsuit for damages. SSA has been tracking and collecting evidence of your defamatory statements. Including copies of your posts on craigslist and will utilize this evidence in a lawsuit against you if necessary.
Very Truly Yours, Heather K. Gaines

What was the parent upset about??
    * For SSA not informing the parent that a teacher acted sexually inappropriate towards a female student. The school concealed that investigation and failed by law to inform the authorities and the parent.
    * Falsifying inoculation records as an attempt to have the child removed from the school.
*Making threats of a lawsuit prior to letter from the schools attorney for demanding those be held accountable.
    * Mr. Karatas and the board of directors will conceal dangerous activities from parents and encourages staff to do the same.

The Parent Association has no authority over teachers or governing board.
“Yes, they failed to properly investigate the matter, but that is a common problem with charter schools. They do not have the staff, resources or counselors to address every need. The public school system is in a better position. “
    Valerie Cavazos

Arizona Daily Star April 27, 2010
    • “Strategic ambiguity” — That’s what sociologist Joshua Hendrick called the Gülenist tendency toward obscuring its presence one moment and highlighting it the next. That came to my mind as I thought back to an exchange with Mr. Fatih Karatas, the principal of Sonoran Science Academy’s high school and middle school, during my tour of the school. When I asked him where he had worked previously, he told me he was an administrator in “LAUSD.” I clarified that he meant the Los Angeles school district. I was surprised, because I had heard otherwise.
But then I went back to my office, called LAUSD and otherwise checked into it. That’s when I confirmed that Magnolia Science Academy, the Turkish-run charter school chain in Los Angeles, is chartered by the Los Angeles Unified School District. So I wrote Mr. Karatas an email, and he wrote back confirming that’s what he meant: “Yes, Magnolia Science Academy is a charter school in Los Angeles Unified School District. “
